José Parlá

José Parlá’s works have embraced within them the histories, memories, and experiences that Parlá himself lives through in his multicultural surroundings, including dissonance arising from identity politics and immigration issues. Employing not just painting but various media such as sculpture, photography, and video, the abstract works emanate a particularly remarkable presence deriving from his characteristic calligraphy that materializes through his dance-like actions while painting. His works, inheriting the legacy of urban realism while renewing the tradition of post-war abstraction in art history, resemble walls in the city that accumulate material over time and change its appearance according to the people living within them. Diverse remnants and textures of events are braided together in the manner of collective memory.

Parlá was born in Miami to Cuban parents in 1973. An alumnus of the Savannah College of Art and Design and New World School of the Arts, he is currently based in Brooklyn, New York. Parlá is known for his permanent installations of large-scale paintings, such as the monumental mural ONE: Union of the Senses in the lobby of One World Trade Center. Some of his most recent solo exhibitions were held at the Bronx Museum of the Arts (New York), High Museum of Art (Atlanta), HOCA Foundation (Hong Kong), SCAD Museum of Art, (Savannah), Bryce Wolkowitz Gallery (New York), Ben Brown Fine Arts (London), and the Havana Biennial (La Habana Cuba).

Candida Höfer

Candida Höfer is one of the leading artists from Germany, and an internationally renowned photographer part of the Becher school alongside Andreas Gursky, Thomas Struth, and Thomas Ruff. She studied film at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf from 1973, and photography under Bernd and Hilla Becher from 1976. Along with Thomas Ruff, Höfer was also one of the first of the Becher school to use color in their photography. Drawing global attention for her large scale works that photograph interiors of an array of public architectural spaces, from magnificent buildings such as libraries, palaces, and theaters, to familiar buildings of daily life, she was selected to represent Germany at the Venice Biennale in 2003.

Born 1944 in Germany, lives in Cologne. Höfer has exhibited in numerous museums such as the Kunsthalle Basel, Kunsthalle Bern, Museum MMK für Moderne Kunst, and the Museum of Modern Art in New York. She participated in Documenta 11 in 2002. Her works are in the collections of museums around the world, including the Centre Pompidou (Paris), the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, the Museum of Modern Art in New York, and the Basel Kunstmuseum.
