ARTISTS

José Parlá

José Parlá’s works are known for their unique style, which intertwines rhythmic linework with painstakingly accumulated layers, collage, and traces on the canvas in an innovative manner, and have a quality reminiscent of city walls unto which memories and traces are carved. He is widely acclaimed as an artist who has inherited the legacy of American abstract expressionism pioneered by Jackson Pollock and Joan Mitchell, and creates large scale works with themes of identity in the global society, migration, and imagination.

Born 1973, Miami. Parlá studied painting at the Savannah College of Art and Design and the New World School of Arts, currently based in Brooklyn. He has been engaging in various public art projects around the world, receiving acclaim for a large scale 27m mural in the lobby of One World Center in New York, a mural in Barclays Center (Brooklyn), and a collaboration project with French artist JR at the 11th Havana Biennale.
