Yuka Tsuruno Gallery is pleased to present Yuichiro Tamura’s solo exhibition G from Saturday, March 11 to Saturday, April 22, 2017.

Started off with photography and video, Yuichiro Tamura uses multitudinous ways including installation and performance to delve the memories and history embedded in the land and to connect those fragments in his work. In his works such as NIGHTLESS (2010-), which is composed of images taken only via GoogleStreetView, and Milky Bay (2016), which reinterpreted post-war Japanese history through the modern bodybuilding, fragments transformed into new narratives that transcend time and space. Together with the history of media traced by photography and moving image, his works incorporate elements of bodily presence and experience. This is where both factual and fictional matters are intertwined, creating a distinct atmosphere.

The title of this exhibition, G, has several different connotations. Among them, g for “gravity” is the core of this exhibition — an external force that gravitates every object to the earth. The other g stands for “geo” corresponding to Tamura’s own interest in “earth.” Newton is well known for his episode of the apple. It is said that he realized gravity works not only on the earth but also everywhere in space when he was observing an apple. He later on showed that all objects with mass were drawn to each other.

Tamura now resides in Atami, a city located in Shizuoka Prefecture, central Japan. The town used to be a popular holiday destination and has unique geography due to lava layer and faults. The history and images arisen from the area captivates Tamura more than ever.

Every Apple Store in the world has a service counter dubbed the “Genius Bar.” In this exhibition, a new space related to “G” would be created around the forbidden “genius” fruit. Furthermore, a book which overviews Tamura’s previous works will be published along with this exhibition.
